The design of the File-O-Plate is such that it will cause the chain to maintain original cutting efficiency throughout its entire life. A 3/8" pitch chain that is filed back to over the rear rivet, the depth of the depth gauge should be .038" to be equivalent to the .025" that it was when it left the factory.

Me, I like to uncrimp the muffler and pull the whole baffle system out of the muffler. The difference in gauge is .008" obviously enough. Running a .050" chain in a .058" bar groove, given that normal tolerances and wear will result in even more clearance, clearly can let the chain dance laterally. This is how it works on cable driven tachometers on tractors. So to put 2000 hours on a chainsaw it would have to run at its rated RPM for 2000 hours. I figure a chainsaws rated RPM is full throttle. Since chainsaws are not run wide open all the time it take more than 2000 hours to put 2000 hours of engine time on.
